Be careful when editing your .bashrc file! Before you do anything to it, I would make a backup just in case you mess up.

To make a quick back up just type this:
cp .bashrc .bashrc.bak

Enjoy!

I was pretty terrified when I saw my firewall logs saying so many connections to this 007guard dot com, so boy was I relieved to discover that my hosts file was properly disallowing access to this address!

My hosts file had the line containing localhost commented out, with the following explanation: "localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself". So this must be something done on purpose in Windows 7, though its impact must not have been thoroughly investigated.

You explained the situation and its resolution well in this article. One thing that might be worth adding is that if you are not in the Administrator's account, you can't modify the hosts file even if your Windows Explorer window has Administrator permission. The solution is to save changes to a new file (Admin password required if saving in the same folder as the old hosts), rename the old (Admin password required), and then rename the new (Admin password required). Whew! :)

Glad you found this post useful! I agree that the problem seems to not be with RDPv6 at the moment since, rdesktop in fedora 11 and 12 seem to be experiencing the same horrible performance even if the server has RDP v5 installed.

It might be a bug in rdesktop or a problem with that particular build of RDP on the server. At this point I'll have to take a deeper look since it appears to only be affecting 3 servers in particular whils the others work fine.

Good Luck!

Thank you for this. I ran into the same problem yesterday -- noticed that my tsclient+rdesktop connection from the Ubuntu Jaunty side of my computer was a lot slower than the Remote Desktop Connection from the Win XP Pro side, to the same Windows Server 2003 machine.

I had a hard time finding any explanations for the difference. My issue isn't even that the server had been updated to RDPv6. Even with version 5.2 -- by coincidence, down to exactly the same build that you're illustrating above -- Jaunty's rdesktop performs noticeably worse than mstsc.exe in Win XP Pro SP3.
